Ordinarily, Sean and I wouldn’t even think of traveling on a long weekend – especially, the last, long weekend of the summer, labour day. But given that the moon would be the darkest on this particular week, well, we really didn’t have a choice.
Therefore, moon + bioluminescence tour trumps long weekend, cross-border travel.
For the longest time now, I have been wanting to see phosphorescent waters. And since traveling to Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico was out of the question (for now), the fact that there are such waters practically in our backyard, is definitely worth checking out.
Even if that means we had to wake up at the ungodly hour of 7am to make our way to Aldergrove/Linden border crossing. The wait wasn’t too bad – 35 minutes – compared to 1hr to 1.5 hrs at Peace Arch.
We arrived early to Anacortes and waited for the 11:55am ferry to San Juan Islands. It took just over an hour to arrive at downtown San Juan. Luckily, just a stone’s throw from the Island Inn, where we were staying.
Can I just say that I love this little boutique hotel. It originally constructed as loft homes, but in the housing crisis of 2008, with no interest from buyers, it was then converted to become a boutique lodgings.
We stayed in the Euro 4 suite. I love the modern and zen decor – the bright and airy aesthetics completely matches my style, which is probably why it felt like a home, rather than a hotel.
And the small touches, like a welcome letter, fresh fruit tray, organic waffle weave towels, wall-mounted HDTV and luxury linens on a king sized bed made such a positive impression on us.
The only drawback is that as it’s a boutique hotel, there is no kitchen, hence, there is no room service. But there are menus aplenty and delivery nearby.
Although the Island Inn offers a stunning view of the marina, but not in the suite we were staying, who’d ever want to venture out when you have so much to luxuriate in inside? If not for our bioluminescence tour, we’d have hole ourselves up and ordered in.
