in need of a sabbatical

amsterdam
two jobs for two years. the burnout is real and i’m in need of a much needed sabbatical. so next month i’ll be jetting off to europe for an extended holiday.

a 6 week extended holiday.

i’ve never been away from home for that long – not counting living in new york for a couple of years. i think the longest i’ve been on vacation for is 3 weeks? so, this is going to be as fun, as it will be a challenge.

i’ll be hitting up central europe, visiting netherlands, switzerland, austria, czech republic, and many points in germany. sean will be joining me for the first 10 days and then i’ll be on my own. five weeks without the fella! that is going to feel all sorts of strange. can i do it? will i stop my trip and come home early? what about my kitty? it’s almost enough to give me pause about taking this extend-o holiday.

we’ll kick it all off with one of my favourite cities in the world, amsterdam.  i haven’t been to since 2010 and i’m excited to show sean why i love it so much. and since i had such a good time in berlin last year, and it was one of the trips sean and i always wanted to do together, so we’ll head there after amsterdam.

then he’ll head home because of work, and i’ll journey on because, sabbatical. this is going to be fun. stay tuned.

damage and joy with jesus and mary chain

damage and joy
i like this new jesus and mary chain tour schedule. it was only a couple of years ago that jesus and mary chain came to vancouver for their psychocandy 30th anniversary tour. before that, it was 1992. (!) although, that’s only vancouver. jesus and mary chain has been touring regularly since 2012. before that it was 2007-2008, and before that it was in 1998.

suffice it to say, anytime i can see jesus and mary chain perform, i’ll take it.

damage and joy
this time, sean was able to come with me. and it’s not just me – most everyone at the vogue theatre were our age or thereabouts. it was like attending a high school reunion – shoe-gazing to the classics like, just like honey and some candy talking, and rocking out to punchier songs like head on and far gone and out.

they played songs from damage and joy, their first album in 19 years (!) and the brothers reid were in fine form – william reid was chatty and humble and seemed very appreciative to be performing. time really does mellow us all out.

going from barely touring to touring somewhat regularly, it’s always a pleasure to see jesus and mary chain. their stage presence may have matured, but their cascading wall of sound and screaming guitar feedback have never changed.

linkin park to return to vancouver

linkin park
in my tiny fists of fury, a ticket to linkin park! snagged row 1, plaza level. no one in front of this shorty!

one more light
linkin park returns to vancouver october 15 with their ‘one more light’ world tour with special guest, snoop dogg. if this show is as good as the last time they were here in 2012, it’ll be a helluva good time.

birthday horseback riding in the valley

horsebackriding
these guys…

for their milestone birthdays, sean and his 2 best friends wanted to do something different, something fun and outdoorsy. something that would be memorable. and that thing turned out to be horseback riding in the valley.

we called up glen valley stables in langley and booked ourselves a 90 minute trail ride. we met our guide, joanne, at the entrance to the campbell valley park, where horses were welcome.

horseback riding
my horse was named freckles and would be the leader of the pack – always having to be the one behind the guide’s horse. sean got texas, which was just purr-fect for him, and followed behind me. blackwell and dustin’s horses brought up the rear.

the ride was so much fun, like when sean and i went horseback riding in pemberton. except this time, we weren’t riding with a group. it was just us four and our guide.

the horses were well-trained and joanne was super friendly and easy-going. we got to do some trotting, parked the horses in a meadow so they could graze on some grass, and walked amongst some old growth rainforest.

happy birthday to my fella, blackwell and dustin. nothing like spending your special day with your besties and with animals.

game of thrones live concert experience comes to vancouver

GoT live
music is here! how do you take your game of thrones? some fans just watch the show, some watch the show and go to the conventions, while others have read the books and watch the show, and yet others will read the books, watch the show and be all about the music. the latter would be us, because sean and i just love movie soundtracks and scores and the game of thrones live concert experience featuring ramin djawadi is just our jam.

the immersive game of thrones live concert experience pulled out all the stops – featuring a full orchestra, choir, solo musical performances, a 360° stage, and stunning state-of-the-art technology showcasing footage from the show on jumbotron screens, as well as, really cool visuals created for the tour.

there were confetti snow (winter is coming!), confetti red petals falling from the weirwood tree, dragon’s breath (shooting flames from a rig), and the green wildfire (pyrotechnics and smoke) that blew up the great sept of baelor. boom!

GoT live
not saying that a newbie couldn’t enjoy the game of thrones live concert experience, but it really is for the super fans of the show. highlight reels included all the best and most gut-wrenching moments from the past 6 seasons – accompanied to sweeping and lush musical scores, epic battle anthems and heart-soaring love ballads. we were swept up on this musical  journey across the seven kingdoms, from king’s landing to winterfell, from the wall to mereen and everywhere in between.

a night of classical music might not be some people’s cup of tea, but we are not some people. and i admit, i won’t be the first to line up for a night of beethoven or mozart, but when it comes movies (or in this case, tv), in concert, sign me up. ramin djawadi is right up there with the likes of john williams, danny elfman, hans zimmer, clint mansell, michael nyman, and james horner.

if you dig on game of thrones, or movies and their soundtracks, the game of thrones live concert experience is a must.

celebrating our anniversary at the shangri-la

shangrila
as is our custom when it comes to anniversaries, we forgo presents to each other and instead celebrate with hotel stays. sooner or later, we’ll have stayed at all the 4 and 5 star hotels in vancouver. we’ve already stayed at the pan pacific, l’hermitage, and the rosewood hotel georgia. this time we chose to celebrate at the shangri-la.

the asian influenced shangri-la is one of the tallest buildings downtown. it conforms to feng shui principles and was blessed from roof to foundations by monks. there is no 4th floor (as the number is bad luck in chinese culture). with the rosewood panelling, marble, crystal chandeliers, gold colour schemes, it all felt very familiar, very chinese. it felt like we were in shanghai, hong kong or even at a posh relatives place.

dig on the marble bathroom with walk in shower plus deep soaker tub. AND a tv in the mirror! how awesome is that? i want this in our dream house.

vancouverview
our view out on the patio was not bad either. just a stone’s throw from robson street.

the outdoor pool was nice and relaxing too. but don’t let this picture fool you. minutes after i took it, a dozen other guests came down to partake in the pool and hot tub like we were doing.

we capped off our anniversary with the italian opera buffet at oceans 999. delicious italian cuisine, coupled with live opera and waterfront views is not a shabby way to celebrate our 8th year together. eight!

it’s hard to believe it’s been 8 years. it feels like it’s flown by in a blink of an eye. i can’t wait to see what the next 8 years will bring. happy anniversary babe.
