Hooked Up

ekg machine electrodes
On a sunny Saturday when I should’ve been out basking in what’s sure to be a mere handful of summer days remaining, I was sitting in a med lab, waiting to get an EKG as per my doctor’s instruction.

The procedure took about 10 minutes. twelve electrodes were placed on various parts of my body: both side of my calves, both sides of my upper arms and the remaining six running underneath my left boob up to my heart. The electrodes are then hooked up to an EKG machine as it takes a reading of my heart’s electrical activity. I had to lay very still during the whole procedure so unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures of me being all wired up a la Frankenstein.

If you want to know how an EKG measures the signals going through each part of the heart, find out more at National Lung, Heart and Blood Institute.

Before I knew it, the test was over and I was left with 12 pink circular imprints on my body from where the clinician peeled off the sticky electrodes. My graph will now be sent to the cardiologist and fingers crossed, everything will come back a-ok.
