Victoria Conference 2014

Wheels up!

It was my work’s 3 day annual conference. This year, it took place in Victoria, as opposed to last year in Whistler and next year in Kelowna.

We stayed at the Empress Hotel with the Conference Centre located just behind it. The Edwardian-era hotel is one of the oldest in Victoria and the design feels like it. Why, just walking through the corridors made me imagine I was a passenger on the Titanic. Although there were many rooms still styled in that era, my room was more modern.

And good thing too – as this held the fear of any ghosts at bay. No thanks to one of my coworkers who instilled fear into us, by sharing stories of elevator doors that opened for no reason or the feeling of a presence in the hallway. She may have an overactive imagination, but The Empress is said to be the home to a number of ghosts.

Just fyi – I have no qualms of asking for a room change if I did feel any heebie jeebies. Not. At. All.

For my part at the conference, I was hosting an “e-hub” on the trade show floor, where I encouraged attendees to take a selfie for a chance to win prizes. We also set up a charging station for mobile devices, a twitter screen, a selfie wall and wifi connectivity.

The highlight of the leadership conference for me was our keynote, Kirstine Stewart, head of Twitter Canada. I am a HUGE fangirl. And I got to meet her after her presentation. For the win!

We wrapped up the end of the conference with a fun Mardi Gras-themed dinner, as well as, an awards dinner and gala.

Although it was a lot of hard work, long days and exhausted nights, I had fun with my close-knit team. Being around the clock with people you enjoy and get along with makes a world of a difference.

Plus getting to go away on a one week work trip every year is not too shabby either.
