A Return to the Cinemas – Quarantine Edition

You can’t keep two movie lovers away from going to the cinemas, except in the case of a global pandemic. And even then, we’ll plan to go, while doing so in the safest manner possible.

That means, hitting up VIP screenings instead of regular screenings. The main advantage of VIP is that the seats are spaced further apart. For that extra bit of distance, we don’t mind paying a little bit more for VIP tickets.

And since we’re quite flexible on when we could go, we’d keep an eye on Cineplex’s real-time seating map to see how many people will be attending the screening and choose the one that’s least attended.

We chose Peninsula for our first foray back to the theatres. Sean and I loved Train to Busan, so we were really excited at what this standalone sequel might be like.  (side note: Train to Busan is better).

But when what might be the one and only blockbuster for this year (hopefully not!) was released, we definitely headed to the Cineplex to watch Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Because Christopher Nolan. His movies are made for the multiplexes.

We both enjoyed Tenet and like all Nolan movies, it deserves multiple viewings to capture the details you missed the first time around and to let everything sink in. If you’re a Nolan fan, I think you’ll enjoy it. I liked it but my favourite Nolan movies are still Inception and Interstellar.

Now it’s just waiting for the next new blockbuster releases. I’m still holding out hope on Wonder Woman 1984 at the end of the year. However, that’s all hinging on how a tentpole movie like Tenet performs and if people will show up for movies during a pandemic. A lot of movies have already pushed forward their dates into 2021. (look at all those delayed movies!)

Sure, drive-in movies are fun and retro slash nostalgic, but we love the experience of  being in the dark theatre, watching a cinematic movie play out on a three-story screen, enveloped by surround sound. There is something inherently wrong with watching a blockbuster movie on a phone, iPad, laptop or TV. We love the whole movie-going experience and we stand by this. Some movies just need to be seen in the theatres. Come at us.
