Spotify: 2020 Wrapped

It’s the end of the year, a time for self-reflection and of course, wrap up posts. And once again, Spotify delivers on showcasing to their users their top streamed songs, artists, albums and podcasts in 2020.

The results of my 2019 Wrapped didn’t really come as a huge surprise to me. But 2020 was a year like no other. I spent a lot of my aural time, listening to the equivalent of comfort food songs, in order to help me deal with what was going on in the world. I sought out songs that were like a giant, reassuring hug. And it showed.

What were my most listened to songs + artists? Drum roll please…

My top artist of 2020 was Harry Styles. I am such a fan – unabashedly so.

I like some One Direction songs,  but when he transitioned to becoming a solo artist, it became next level for me. There are so many excellent tracks on his Fine Line album, that it I had it on vinyl, I would’ve probably worn down the record player needle. I’m looking forward to when COVID-19 is behind us and concerts can take place again. Bet your bottom dollar that I will be going to his Love on Tour concert.

According to Spotify, my favourite song of the year was Adore You and I spent 739 minutes, listening to Harry Styles.

Other little factoids about my listening habits:

  • I spent 32,546 minutes on Spotify this year.
  • I listened to 1,328 artists.
  • I discovered 207 new artists and listened to 381 genres (including 55 new ones).
  • I’m a pioneer, listening to Asleep at the Parade by the Young Ebenezers before it hit 50,000 streams.
  • My top decade was the 2000s.

And of my top 5 artists, 3 are soundtrack composers. Because I love movie soundtracks + scores. Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders scored the Ford v Ferrari soundtrack. I really enjoyed the movie too. Jeff Russo scored a bunch of stuff that I had watched, but it was listening to The Umbrella Academy score that made him my #5.

I’m a little surprised that Taylor Swift turned out to be my #2 artist, but then again, folklore was kinda the perfect antidote for the garbage fire that was 2020. Plus I prefer Taylor Swift when she’s slow tempo, rather than when she’s belting out saccharine pop songs.

Here’s my top 10 songs of 2020:

  1. Adore You – Harry Styles
  2. Le Mans 66 – Marco Beltrami + Buck Sanders (Ford v Ferrari soundtrack)
  3. Team Player – Marco Beltrami + Buck Sanders (Ford v Ferrari soundtrack)
  4. 漂流木 (Driftwood) – Aggie Hsieh + William Wei (Upside Down soundtrack)
  5. Be My Baby – The Ronettes
  6. Golden – Harry Styles
  7. And Then He Kissed Me – The Ronettes
  8. Blue Monday – Sebastian Böhm (Wonder Woman 1984 soundtrack)
  9. Lights Up – Harry Styles
  10. We’re Through – The Hollies

So that’s my 2020 playlist in a nutshell. Thanks for the deep dive, Spotify. Until next year.

For fun I also participated in the 30 day song challenge during lockdown. For more musical goodness, check out my IG Stories.
