2013: A Retrospective

2013 retrospective
Did I just blink and the year zipped on by? Because that’s how it felt. Is this what happens when you’ve moved in happily with your significant other and 2 kitties?

Let’s go back in time with a recap of 2013…

January: A Twitter reply from Clint Mansell! Which foreshadowed a decision to go to New York to catch a Clint Mansell’s gig! I would not survive in a zombie apocalypse, not with my aim.

February: Birthday dinner at one of our special occasion place. Spinning the 80s with big hair + big hijinks at Peggy’s 40th. That d-bag ticket reseller can suck it – I got my own Sigur Ros ticket.

March: Fashion! Turn to the left. Fashion! Turn to the right. In another life, I would be a fashion show producer. People, goats on a roof! I love spring, which makes me love our bedroom more. 4 years! Fun times in the dark with friends — get your mind of out the gutter. Going down the rabbit hole with ROH.

April: We heart New York combo birthday slash anniversary celebrations. Sensory overload for Sean on day 1. Feelings at a wall, nostalgic feelings at the Hook & Ladder and fangirl/fanboy feelings for Clint Mansell on day 2. Celebrity run-in with one half of Lenny & Squiggy and prancing around like Bill Murray at Lincoln Centre on day 3. Oh and museums galore. Escape from New York on day 4.  I’ve been blogging now for 5 years (!) Joining the conversation and being retweeted by Clint Mansell. Our furry children plotting to overthrow something.

May: Kriss Kross will make ya jump, jump! Getting showered on by blossom petals once again. A mist-ical concert in the park with Sigur Ros. Birthday with the horses at Southlands. Bat those peepers. Getting my lashes did.

June: Exploring Mundy Park. As cute as they are, sometimes you want to boot them in the kiester. Our friend’s band has the most adorable little groupies. I love Twitter reason #183 – David Usher tweets me. My baby grows up and has 1M+ friends. I may be Asian but that doesn’t mean I don’t burn like a raisin in the sun, at the food cart fest, on the hottest day of the year.

July: My sweet boy and the cone of shame. More shame and even more shame.

August: Checking in for date night at the VAG’s Grand Hotel exhibit. Happy double kitty meow day! I want to know more than just ‘I love you’ and ‘I don’t know’ in Mandarin, so I contributed to my 2nd kickstarter.

September: Charlie the bombay cat. Kayaking through bioluminescent waters trumps the Northern lights AND traveling on a dreaded long weekend. A masonic forest mausoleum, alpacas, fields of lavender and whale bones on day 2 at Friday Harbour. Happy 2nd birday Charlie! 6 days in Whistler with my coworkers. Sean gets the house all to himself! My dear friend from England kicks off his South American travels with a visit to Vancouver.

October: I haven’t traveled with my mom in YEARS, because she’s scared of flying. So that means I should travel with her overseas to China, right? And Sean gets the house all to himself again! Getting lost in historic Beijing on day 1. Big time jelly legs after hiking the Great Wall on day 2. City of lights in Xi’an on day 3. Ancient wall and ancient warriors on day 4. Trough toilets in Wuxi on day 5 (!) Nanjing kinda sucked but the kids more than made up for that on day 6. Cruising the Venice of the East on day 7. Eating a bowl of tea in Hangzhou on day 8. The lights, sounds and ooh-la-la of Shanghai on day 9. I love you mom but I got to go on my own way…to Chengdu on day 10. Hugging a baby panda at Bifengxia on day 11! Even more pandas on day 12! I’m in fashion heaven at the Christian Dior retrospective at MoMA Shanghai on day 13. Taken for a ride in a vintage sidecar on day 14. Missed out on being the evil queen from Snow White because of jetlag. Our first Casa de Sullichan Halloween.

November: Meeting a real life astronaut at Vancouver Aquarium. My sidecar adventures in pictures. Meeting Canada’s favourite astronaut, Chris Hadfield. After almost a year of living together, Jonesy STILL doesn’t want to be touched. Me-ow.

December: Rocking the tacky look at the office for ugly Christmas sweater day. Tweet-a-panda vending machine for a chance to get a panda stuffy. Reason I love Twitter #484 – some favouriting love from my favourite futurist. The return of Moist and feeling like I’m in my 20s again. Charlie’s first experience with the white stuff. No plastic Christmas trees in this house! Can you just picture Sean doing his revised Joan Crawford impression? I didn’t get to do holiday cards this year, so this was the next best thing.

Upon reflection, I had a hella busy year! Particularly the latter half. I’m glad travel was a big part of it too: New York, San Juan Islands, China. And more than that – that Sean, the kitties and I are settling in nicely to being domestic together. Here’s to more cooking, more traveling and more good times in 2014!
